HISTORY OF THE AREA

In 1867, Keshab Chandra Sen established Prarthana Samaj in Mumbai. The Prarthana Samaj or “Prayer Society” was a movement for religious and social reform that supported liberal principles and the removal of caste and community barriers.

The French writer, photographer and traveller, Louis Rousselet, visited the city in the early 1800s and compared the region of Girgaon to Rue Breda of Montmartre, Paris; known to house a number of musicians, artists and poets.
